I was deeply moved in Assisi, Italy, when I visited the small side chapel in the Basilica di Santa Clara and saw the cross of San Damiano for the first time. The words of this prayer were printed on this small card. After this, prior to dinner, I ran to the room I was staying in at St Anthony’s Guesthouse to write out the chords and some of the melody. This card still remains in my mandolin case today. This was an unusual experience for me of how a song can emerge from a powerful and moving experience.
